Everything was set for the conference I was organizing, so I decided to go for a walk and discover the city. My first stop was the Rabat Medina, a\u00a0souk with tiny alleys full of shops selling ceramics, spices, leather, carpets, jewelry&#8230; My eyes soaked in the colors, the smell of spices tingled my nose and my taste buds, the chatter of the sellers was a foreign music to my ears. I immersed myself in the experience as I was walking among the crowd. Just outside of the Medina I entered the small streets of the old town and sat on a bench.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">There was nothing spectacular about this moment, but there was this<strong> feeling of content, of fullness and satisfaction.<\/strong> I just sat there, slowly breathing, appreciating the possibility to be there, at that particular moment in time. I remember saying to myself: &#8220;<em>Take it in, take it all in<\/em>&#8220;. <strong>Breathing, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling.<\/strong>A moment that I still remember and probably I will remember forever, because that was the first time in my life when I fully experienced deliberately something like this. It was like taking a mental 3D video of the moment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--left-align\">\n<figure class=\"reader-image-block__figure\">\n<div class=\"ivm-image-view-model\">\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember65\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered  reader-image-block__img evi-image lazy-image ember-view\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/v2\/D4E12AQEA6harvMRL5A\/article-inline_image-shrink_1000_1488\/article-inline_image-shrink_1000_1488\/0\/1690888305943?e=1748476800&amp;v=beta&amp;t=OQsbzLgccsdnscUcQoSzyJDHQO_gYreStCPQ_MCo5a4\" alt=\"No alt text provided for this image\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"reader-image-block__figure-image-caption display-block full-width text-body-small-open t-sans text-align-center t-black--light\">In front of the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Rabat, Morocco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Since then I often practice this &#8220;technique&#8221;, and only a few years back I discovered that in positive psychology there is a term for it: <strong>Savoring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Savoring\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><strong>Savoring<\/strong><\/a><strong> is &#8220;the use of thoughts and actions to increase the intensity, duration, and appreciation of positive experiences and emotions.&#8221; <\/strong>The father of the savoring research, Fred Bryant, a social psychologist <em>&#8220;introduced the concept of savoring as being mindfully engaged and aware of one&#8217;s feelings during positive events<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p>But, &#8220;savoring is not merely the experience of positive emotions, but the deliberate effort to make a positive experience last.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>When we engage fully into the experience<\/em>, being aware and mindful of every detail and take it in to deeper levels &#8211; we assign meaning and importance to this memory. Later on when we recall it, it is a vivid memory and we are immediately transported back then and we see, hear and feel as if we were there.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You can savor past events too, by remembering all the detailed modalities &#8211; what you saw, what you heard, what you felt, what you smelled and tasted back then. This way you can bring back a moment from memory, we all know how to do that, right? The best part is that<strong> this immediately changes your state.<\/strong> In NLP this is called <em><strong>Anchoring<\/strong><\/em><em>, a wonderful set of techniques that allows you to bring resourceful states on demand,<\/em> whenever you need them, just with a touch of a spot on your body. It is a technique that I teach at the <a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/vianlp.com\/mk\/international-nlp-practitioner\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">\u041d\u041b\u041f \u041f\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0442\u0438\u0447\u0430\u0440<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--full-width\">\n<figure class=\"reader-image-block__figure\">\n<div class=\"ivm-image-view-model\">\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember74\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered  reader-image-block__img evi-image lazy-image ember-view\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/v2\/D4E12AQEkLcOu99x3jQ\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232\/0\/1690896595919?e=1748476800&amp;v=beta&amp;t=CBt2F-f98-M5xJLzw6lZi49Sd6Eh-oXs-EOsBJGdtNk\" alt=\"No alt text provided for this image\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Let&#8217;s test it now! Play with me \ud83d\ude42 <\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<p id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Notice your current state as you are reading this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Now, remember a moment when you felt really happy (or choose any emotion that you want) and go back now to that memory. Step into the experience. See what you saw then through your own eyes, all the details, who was there with you, make the colors bright and strong. Hear what you heard back then, all the voices and sounds. Feel what you felt back then, outside and inside of yourself. Fully step into the experience and stay there for a few moments. <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>What happened to your state? <\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Next, <\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The silent treatment<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I am writing often on the subject of relationships, and if you haven&#8217;t read it before I invite you to read the <a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/you-lucky-dont-have-children-so-go-home-viktoria-jordanovska\/?trackingId=K4Cx6TgaSFaYOsvzGJ70uQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">November newsletter<\/a>where I write on toxic relationships and creating boundaries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Have you ever experienced someone ghosting you? Withdrawing into silence? Ignoring you? Giving you a cold shoulder or freezing you out? <\/em> However you call it,<strong> I bet we have all experienced the silent treatment<\/strong> &#8211; giving it and\/or receiving it \ud83d\ude42 And, I bet we all know that <span class=\"tvm-operation__underline\"><strong>it can be a damaging choice of response!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember84\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The silent treatment refers to the &#8220;<a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.choosingtherapy.com\/silent-treatment\/#:~:text=Over%20time%2C%20the%20use%20of,%2C%20control%2C%20and%20meaningful%20existence.\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><em>act<\/em><\/a><em> of intentionally withdrawing from an interaction, refusing to engage further, and shutting the other person out for extended periods of time&#8221;<\/em>. If you are on the receiving end, you feel invisible, like you don&#8217;t matter and as <a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3406317\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0443\u0432\u0430\u045a\u0430<\/a>shows, this is experienced as real pain. This refusal to verbally communicate with someone is often used as means of punishment,\u00a0emotional manipulation, or control.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember85\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p><em>&#8220;Research has found that people who received the silent treatment\u00a0experienced a threat to their needs of belonging, self-esteem, control, and meaningful <\/em><a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2000-03418-002\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><em>existence<\/em><\/a><em>.&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember86\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Dr. John Gottman calls this communication style <a class=\"eLkeKfLANpCeIaaehlTorHkfbdUHqQFXesk\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gottman.com\/blog\/the-four-horsemen-recognizing-criticism-contempt-defensiveness-and-stonewalling\/\" target=\"_self\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">stonewalling<\/a>. As the word suggests, it is building a stone wall between you and your counterpart.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-embed-block__iframe-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse | The Gottman Institute: Relationship Behaviors that Lead to Failure\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embeds\/publishingEmbed.html?articleId=7046613423021145552&amp;li_theme=light\" width=\"632\" height=\"356\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p id=\"ember87\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Now, please be aware that <span class=\"tvm-operation__underline\">there is a difference between the silent treatment and taking space<\/span> for yourself. When someone takes space it\u2019s communicated: &#8220;I need some space right now and I will go for a walk, we will talk when I return, tomorrow&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember88\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p><em><strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t engage with someone giving the silent treatment. Silent treatment is a form of manipulation to control another person. Allow them to be silent. Don&#8217;t beg to be spoken to. When they return, let them know you won&#8217;t tolerate your existence being denied.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember89\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This quote above by psychologist Dr. Nicole LePera, has helped me and many of my clients enormously to feel better about myself and not feel guilty when I am not engaging with someone giving me the silent treatment.
